On American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska it is 22 × 14 × 9 inches (56 × 36 × 23 cm), including wheels and handles. Southwest is more generous at 24 × 16 × 10 inches. European budget carriers are tighter, so a bag that clears a US airline can still be too big for Ryanair.

For most airlines a checked bag is capped at 158 cm (62 inches) total, adding length, width and height, and 23 kg (50 lb) in economy. Frontier treats anything over 40 lb (18 kg) as overweight, while some Middle East and Asian carriers allow 30 kg. Overweight or oversized bags mean a fee, so weigh yours at home.
