Questions people ask

What is the standard carry-on size?

On American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska it is 22 × 14 × 9 inches (56 × 36 × 23 cm), including wheels and handles. Southwest is more generous at 24 × 16 × 10 inches. European budget carriers are tighter, so a bag that clears a US airline can still be too big for Ryanair.

Does the carry-on size include wheels and handles?

Yes. Airlines measure the bag at its widest points with wheels and handles included, which is why a bag sold as '22 inch' can still fail the sizer. Measure the real outer dimensions.

What size bag fits every airline?

A bag within about 55 × 35 × 20 cm clears the US carry-on standard and the tighter European cabin limits, so it goes in the overhead bin almost anywhere. Note that budget airlines only include a smaller under-seat bag for free; anything larger usually costs extra.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

US airlines generally do not weigh cabin bags, but many international and budget carriers do, with limits around 7 to 10 kg. Ryanair's Priority cabin bag, for example, is capped at 10 kg. Always check your airline and fare.
